Should Your Business Start with CFO or CFP?

As the creator of a carbon measurement platform, this is the question I get asked most:
For a business like ours, should we measure CFO or CFP first?

If you're still fuzzy on the difference between the two, feel free to read this first:
CFO vs. CFP: Learn the key differences

In reality, there isn't one "right" answer.
The short version is: "It depends on your goals."

Choose CFP (Product Level) if...#

  • Your partners demand it: Big players in the stock market might be gathering Scope 3 data or have policies to only work with green suppliers. Also, if you are exporting to Europe (CBAM), they might flat out say, "No carbon label, no deal."
  • You want a unique selling point: Having a carbon score on your product makes it stand out and helps you break into new, premium markets.

If you are a manufacturer with a clear Hero Product and want to beat the competition with an Eco-friendly image, jumping straight into CFP is a solid strategy.

Choose CFO (Organization Level) if...#

  • You need an ESG report: Essential if your company needs to report to shareholders or is listed on the stock exchange.
  • You're working with banks or seeking Green Finance: Banks generally require CFO data rather than CFP to track their own Scope 3 emissions.
  • You want an easy start: CFO is generally simpler and more budget-friendly. It is often the best first step for most businesses to get started.

Of course, choosing between CFO and CFP also depends on your budget, timeline, and how much data you actually have on hand.

At picarbon, we're happy to help with both.
If you're ready to start measuring your impact, let's talk.
